On a rain-drowned Friday night in Chicago, a rideshare carrying five strangers is hit twice on Lake Shore Drive.
Dionne, a caseworker running on empty. Kellan, the tech founder whose own creation may have chosen the passengers. Jada, an ER nurse who stopped believing in accidents three years ago. Micah, a seventeen-year-old violinist who hears a frequency no one else can. And Rico, the driver, who has survived enough wars to know a kill box when he’s driven into one.
The crash wasn’t an accident. It was an experiment. When the five finally compare what they remember, they discover something worse than being watched: they didn’t survive the same crash. Someone built five versions of that night, one for each of them. Someone is measuring what they do next. And beneath the watchers, something older is listening for the moment they understand what they’ve become.
They were chosen because they were predictable. They survive by becoming the one thing no algorithm can model: people who choose each other.
